Akwa Ibom Police Arrest Ex-Convict Impersonating Military Personnel


 The Akwa Ibom State Police Command announced the arrest of Edidiong Matthew, an ex-convict impersonating military personnel. According to a statement released by the State Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Timfon John, the 35-year-old suspect from Ikot Ekong in Mkpat Enin local government area was apprehended following tips from the public.

The statement, made available on Thursday in Uyo, revealed that Matthew had been involved in numerous criminal activities.

"On 05/06/2024 at about 14:00hrs, police operatives of the command on crime prevention patrol arrested Edidiong Anthony Matthew, a 35-year-old indigene of Ikot Ekong Village in Mkpat Enin LGA, dressed partially in military camouflage," the statement read.

Preliminary investigations indicated that Matthew, an ex-convict, had been committing various crimes while dressed in a military uniform with a warrant officer rank. The police recovered several items from him, including a walkie-talkie, phones suspected to be stolen, a brown coverall, and an RCC ID card.

The statement added that Matthew would face charges upon the completion of the investigation. It also emphasized the command’s ongoing efforts to apprehend other criminals on their wanted lists.

“This follows the Commissioner of Police, Akwa Ibom State Police Command, CP Waheed Ayilara’s affirmation of the command’s unwavering commitment and dedication to making Akwa Ibom inhabitable for criminals,” the statement concluded.
