Attacker of Nancy Pelosi's Husband Convicted in State Trial

David DePape, the man who attacked Nancy Pelosi’s husband with a hammer at their San Francisco home, was convicted on Friday of aggravated kidnapping in a state trial that could result in a life sentence. This follows his previous conviction in a federal trial over the same 2022 incident, where he was sentenced to 30 years in federal prison last month.

The San Francisco jury also found DePape guilty of first-degree burglary, false imprisonment of an elder, threatening a family member of a public official, and dissuading a witness. DePape's public defender, Adam Lipson, acknowledged guilt on some charges but contested the evidence for the charges of threatening a family member and aggravated kidnapping.

The state charges stemmed from DePape’s attack on Paul Pelosi, which occurred on October 28, 2022. DePape had broken into the Pelosi residence, assaulted Paul Pelosi, and intended to kidnap and coerce a confession from Nancy Pelosi regarding alleged crimes. The attack, captured on police body-cam footage, resulted in severe injuries to Paul Pelosi, including a skull fracture.

DePape's defense argued that his actions were influenced by isolation and exposure to conspiracy theories. The state trial judge had earlier dismissed charges of attempted murder, elder abuse, and assault with a deadly weapon, acknowledging double jeopardy concerns.

The incident has had significant political and legal ramifications, highlighting the dangers of political extremism and conspiracy-driven violence.
