Shelling Kills 22 in Gaza, Damages ICRC Office Amid Displaced Palestinians

A shelling attack in Gaza, which struck near the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) office and a makeshift camp for displaced Palestinians, has resulted in 22 deaths. The attack occurred in the al-Mawasi area, which had been designated as a humanitarian "safe zone."

The ICRC confirmed the shelling had damaged its office and that 22 bodies, along with 45 injured individuals, were taken to a nearby field hospital. The attack led to additional casualties, with the health ministry in the Hamas-controlled territory reporting 25 dead and 50 injured, attributing the shelling to Israel.

Witnesses reported that the incident began with a loud bang followed by a more deadly strike, targeting individuals who emerged from their tents to help those panicked by the initial explosion. Some of the deceased were struck while attempting to assist others.

The Israeli military is reviewing the incident but stated that there is no indication of an IDF strike within the designated safe zone. Despite this, the ICRC criticized the firing near humanitarian structures, stressing that the locations are clearly marked and known to the conflict parties.

The attack is part of a broader and devastating conflict, with over 37,400 Palestinians killed in Israeli strikes over the past nine months, leaving nearly the entire population of Gaza homeless. The ICRC and other international bodies have been urging both sides to adhere to international law and protect civilians.
