EFCC Collaborates with NANS to Combat Cybercrime and Promote Youth Innovation

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has expressed its readiness to collaborate with the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) and encouraged students to act as whistleblowers on cybercrimes.

Michael T. Wetkas, the acting Zonal Director of the EFCC's Lagos Zonal Office, conveyed this message on Thursday, June 20, 2024, during a courtesy visit from NANS members to his office in Lagos. Wetkas urged students nationwide to embrace creativity and original thinking while rejecting cybercrimes.

Describing the youth as the “building blocks of the nation,” Wetkas warned that cybercrime poses a significant threat to Nigeria's development. He emphasized, “The strength of any nation lies in its youths and educational level. The country needs a generation of progressive individuals who will maximize their talents.”

Wetkas also noted that cybercrime has evolved from traditional "yahoo plus" schemes to more sophisticated forms like sextortion.

Earlier, NANS National Senate Clerk Oladimeji Uthman expressed gratitude to the EFCC for their prompt response to the visit request. Acknowledging the involvement of some students in cybercrime, he affirmed the Association's commitment to combating internet fraud.

Lagos State NANS Chairman Alimi Lekan Idris also spoke, seeking collaboration with the EFCC to organize sensitization programs about the dangers and consequences of cybercrimes during the Association’s annual students’ weeks.
