Ekiti High Court Sentences Four to Death for Armed Robbery and Murder

Four men, Sola Ogunleye, Ebenezer Adebayo, Lasisi Afeez, and Ojo Oba, were sentenced to death by hanging on Thursday for charges of murder and armed robbery.

They were arraigned before Justice L.O. Ogundana of the Ekiti High Court in Ado-Ekiti, facing charges including murder, attempted murder, and armed robbery.

The armed robbery charges were in violation of Section 6(b) of the Robbery and Firearms (Special Provisions) Act, Cap. R11, Laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 2004. The murder and attempted murder charges were contrary to Sections 319 (1) and 320 of the Criminal Code Law, Cap.C16, Laws of Ekiti State, 2012.

In delivering the judgment, Justice Ogundana affirmed that the prosecution had proven the charges against the defendants beyond a reasonable doubt. Consequently, the judge convicted the defendants and sentenced them to death by hanging for armed robbery and murder. Additionally, they received life imprisonment sentences for attempted murder and conspiracy.

The prosecution revealed that the crimes were committed on May 29, 2017, at Oyan Orete Camp in Ijan-Ekiti. The convicts had robbed residents at gunpoint and murdered Olasunkanmi Ramon. They also attacked Alhaji Usman Adeleye, inflicting severe machete wounds on his head.

Mr. Julius Ajibare, the Director of Public Prosecutions, represented the state and presented five witnesses and seven exhibits to support the case.

The convicts, who pleaded not guilty, were defended by Mr. Chris Omokhafe and Mr. Oluwaseun Oyebanji. They provided their own testimonies and called two witnesses during the trial.
