Elon Musk's X, previously known as Twitter, has officially updated its guidelines to permit adult and graphic content on the platform.
This update formalizes a policy that had already been in practice before Musk's acquisition of the platform in 2022.
In a recent website update, the San Francisco-based company stated that users “should be able to create, distribute, and consume material related to sexual themes as long as it is consensually produced and distributed. Sexual expression, whether visual or written, can be a legitimate form of artistic expression.”
Although adult content was permitted on Twitter prior to Musk's ownership, there was no official policy outlining this. X has now clarified that it will restrict adult content from being accessible to children and to adult users who prefer not to see it.
"We also prohibit content promoting exploitation, nonconsent, objectification, sexualization or harm to minors, and obscene behaviors," the company stated. It emphasized that adult content is not allowed in "highly visible" areas such as profile photos or banners.
This policy differs from those of other social media platforms like Meta's Instagram and Facebook, as well as TikTok and YouTube. "X's move to allow adult content aligns with its post-Musk marketing strategy," said Brooke Erin Duffy, associate professor of communication at Cornell University. "The platform is unapologetically provocative and aims to set itself apart from 'brand safe' competitors."
Duffy added that the company seems to be appealing to creators and artists marginalized by other platforms' restrictions on nudity or sexual expression. The policy applies to both real and AI-generated content.
X has requested that users who regularly post adult content adjust their media settings to place all such images and videos behind a content warning, requiring viewers to acknowledge the warning before viewing the material.
