Federal Government's Bold Move: Ready to Offer Higher National Minimum Wage Amidst Strike Tensions

The Federal Government has declared its readiness to offer a national minimum wage higher than the initially proposed N60,000, citing the national interest as its primary motivation. This decision was revealed during a meeting convened on Monday night by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, following the commencement of an indefinite strike by organized labor to press for their demand on the minimum wage issue.

In a circular jointly issued by the committee members at the conclusion of the meeting and provided to journalists, it was announced that President Bola Tinubu had expressed his commitment to a national minimum wage exceeding N60,000.

"As a result," the circular stated, "the Tripartite Committee will convene daily over the next week to reach an agreement on a mutually acceptable national minimum wage."

"In acknowledgment of the President's esteemed commitment," it continued, "the organized labor undertakes to promptly convene a meeting of its organs to deliberate on this commitment."

Furthermore, the circular emphasized that no worker would face victimization due to the industrial action.

Present at the meeting were Mohammed Idris, Minister of Information and National Orientation, and Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, Minister of State for Labour and Employment, representing the government. Representing the Organized Labor were Joe Ajaero, President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), and Festus Osifo, President of the Trade Union Congress (TUC).

This meeting followed the withdrawal of Labor from the negotiation process and the subsequent indefinite strike, prompting the government to engage with labor in an attempt to resolve the impasse.
