Ghana Faces Three-Week Power Cuts Due to Gas Shortage from Nigeria

Authorities in Ghana have announced a three-week period of power cuts due to a shortage of gas supply from Nigeria.

According to a statement from the state power firm, the temporary shutdown of an unnamed Nigerian gas supplier for maintenance works is the cause of the shortage.

The Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) issued a joint statement explaining that the load management is necessary "due to maintenance works being undertaken by a gas supplier in Nigeria and is projected to last three (3) weeks."

"The maintenance has caused a reduction in overall power generation capacity in Ghana, which could result in load management over the period of the work," the joint release indicated.

The statement further highlighted that recent interruptions in power supply experienced in parts of the country are due to a decrease in gas supply from Nigeria since June 12.

While apologizing for the inconvenience caused, authorities assured the public that "we are collaborating with other stakeholders in the power value chain to optimize available resources to ensure minimal impact of the reduction in gas supply on consumers."
