Hunter Biden's Law License Suspended in DC Following Gun Charges Conviction

Hunter Biden’s legal practice in Washington, DC has been suspended after his recent federal gun charges conviction, raising the potential for permanent disbarment.

The District of Columbia Court of Appeals issued an order on Tuesday suspending Biden’s law license. This decision follows his conviction on three felony charges earlier this month in Wilmington, Delaware, which the court identified as “serious crimes” under the district’s bar rule.

The court order also initiated formal proceedings to assess whether these offenses constitute “moral turpitude.” Under DC law, lawyers convicted of such crimes must be disbarred.

Hunter Biden, son of US President Joe Biden, was found guilty by a jury of lying on a gun application form in 2018. He failed to disclose his drug addiction when purchasing a Colt Cobra 38 Special revolver and then illegally possessed the gun for 11 days. His then-girlfriend, the widow of his late brother Beau, later discarded the gun in a garbage bin.

The trial featured testimony from several family members and detailed Hunter Biden’s crack cocaine addiction, with Jill Biden, the president’s wife, attending. Joe Biden did not attend the trial.

Hunter Biden, who has detailed his addiction struggles in a memoir and claims to be clean now, has not yet been sentenced. The charges carry a maximum sentence of 25 years in prison and fines of $750,000, although such harsh penalties are uncommon for first-time offenders.

Biden denied the charges, and his lawyer, Abbe Lowell, has requested a new trial on procedural grounds.

Additionally, Hunter Biden faces a trial in Los Angeles in September on tax evasion charges. Republicans have attempted to link his legal issues to his father, leading to a stalled impeachment process in the House of Representatives based on unproven allegations that President Biden profited from his son’s business dealings.
