During Baraboo High School's graduation ceremony on Friday, May 31, a father intervened forcefully to prevent Superintendent Rainey Briggs from shaking his daughter's hand.
As his daughter approached the stage to receive her diploma, the father hurriedly pulled Superintendent Briggs aside before the handshake could occur. Dressed in a white polo shirt and baseball cap, the man stormed the stage immediately after his daughter received her diploma.
Before the daughter could greet Superintendent Briggs, her father grabbed Briggs by the arm and pushed him away, loudly declaring, “That’s my daughter,” as captured in a video by TV43 Baraboo. In the footage, Briggs responded, “You better get up off me, man. Get away from me, bro,” while graduation staff and three Baraboo police officers, including the school resource officer, intervened.
A voice in the background can be heard saying, “I don’t want her touching him.”
Following the confrontation, police escorted the man out of the school. Despite the presence of other officials on stage, including School Board President Kevin Vodak and Principal Steve Considine, the father solely targeted Superintendent Briggs, the only black man present.

District spokesperson Hailey Wagner later confirmed that the father faces a disorderly conduct charge referred to the Sauk County District Attorney’s Office.
This incident comes after a controversial episode in 2018, when Baraboo High School students were seen giving a Nazi salute in a class photo, highlighting ongoing tensions within the school community.
