Cotija Mayor Yolanda Sánchez Figueroa Murdered After Historic Election of Mexico's First Female President

Yolanda Sánchez Figueroa, mayor of Cotija in Mexico’s Michoacán state, has been killed just hours after the country elected its first female president.

Her murder occurred shortly after Claudia Sheinbaum's historic election victory in a campaign season marked by deadly violence against candidates.

According to the state attorney general, Sánchez Figueroa was walking home from a gym with her bodyguard when they were attacked by assailants in a white van. Both were later pronounced dead at the hospital, and an investigation has been launched.

Sánchez Figueroa’s death was confirmed hours after Sheinbaum's landslide victory, making her the first female president of Mexico.

This year has seen widespread violence against politicians, with dozens of candidates and political hopefuls killed by criminal organizations attempting to influence the vote, marking the bloodiest electoral season in Mexico's history.

Sheinbaum is set to begin her presidency on October 1, succeeding outgoing President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, whose social welfare programs have lifted many Mexicans out of poverty.

Mexico's homicide rate is among the highest in the world, and it remains a perilous place for women, with around 10 women murdered every day. Additionally, over 100,000 people remain missing in the country.
