Hajia Hawawu Mohammed, a pilgrim from Kwara State, Nigeria, has tragically passed away in Saudi Arabia, reportedly by suicide. The Executive Secretary of the Kwara State Muslim Pilgrims Board, Abdulsalam Abdulkadir, confirmed the sad news in a statement on Sunday, June 9, 2024.
According to Abdulkadir, Hawawu Mohammed is believed to have taken her own life by jumping from the rooftop of her apartment in Madina. In addition, another pilgrim, Saliu Mohammed, also passed away in Madina. He succumbed to an illness while in the intensive care unit of a public hospital.
Saliu Mohammed had arrived in Saudi Arabia with Batch 3 of the Kwara State contingent, while Hawawu Mohammed was part of Batch 9.
The Kwara State Muslim Pilgrims Board expressed deep regret over these tragic events, extending heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased. The board emphasized its submission to the will and ultimate wisdom of Allah in all matters.
The statement from the board read: "Kwara State Muslim Pilgrims Board sends heartfelt commiserations to the families of two of our pilgrims who returned to their Lord in Madina, Saudi Arabia. Saliu Mohammed, who arrived with Batch 3 of the state contingent, died in an intensive care unit of a public hospital in Madina after suddenly falling ill. Hajia Hawawu Mohammed (Batch 9) also died following what Saudi authorities have investigated and found to be an unfortunate suicidal episode from the rooftop of her apartment in Madina."
