Abia State Governor Urges Development of Attractive Policies to Curb ‘JAPA Syndrome’

Abia State Governor Alex Otti has called on national leaders to implement policies and programs that offer opportunities comparable to those found abroad in order to stem the tide of Nigerians seeking jobs overseas. Speaking at his residence in Umuihim, Nvosi, Isiala Ngwa South LGA, during a visit from the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (CIBN), Otti emphasized that the mass migration of Nigerians, known as ‘JAPA syndrome,’ reflects a response to more appealing conditions abroad.

Otti described the issue as a matter of supply and demand, stating, “Once your economy and your system don’t look conducive or don’t look attractive or if other economies are looking better than yours, they will go there, no matter what you do.” He highlighted that the key to addressing this challenge is to create an enabling environment that offers compelling opportunities to retain Nigerians domestically.

During the meeting, Otti also approved land for the establishment of a Bankers Training Institute in Abia State, as requested by CIBN members. This decision underscores his commitment to enhancing the state’s financial sector and creating more local opportunities.

Mr. Kelechi Adiele, the Public Relations Officer of CIBN, acknowledged the Governor’s efforts in improving the economic and security environment for the banking industry in Abia State. He praised Otti for his initiatives that have restored regular Monday operations for banks in the state, a significant improvement from the previous situation where banks were closed on Mondays due to security concerns.

However, the CIBN executives also voiced concerns about the ongoing exodus of Nigerians seeking better job prospects abroad. They noted that this trend is impacting the banking sector and the broader Nigerian economy, calling for urgent measures to address the root causes driving this migration.
