Actress Kate Henshaw Advocates Against Female Genital Mutilation

 Renowned Nollywood actress Kate Henshaw has called for an end to female circumcision, commonly referred to as Female Genital Mutilation (FGM).

FGM involves the partial or total removal of external female genitalia for non-medical reasons. According to UNICEF, Nigeria ranks third globally in terms of the highest burden of FGM.

Henshaw, a UNICEF ambassador, criticized the practice during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria, urging its eradication. She highlighted the crucial role women play in perpetuating this harmful tradition and called on them to stop and allow young girls to thrive.

"The act is not supported by science and has no medical or moral value," Henshaw stated. "We need to address our own gender, as women are often at the forefront of these harmful practices."

She emphasized that women are often the enforcers of harmful traditions, including FGM, widowhood rites, domestic violence, and child abuse. "We need to be more empathetic and give young girls the chance to grow and live their lives, as there is nothing to be gained from FGM," Henshaw asserted.

Henshaw concluded by urging continuous vigilance and advocacy against any practice harmful to human beings.
