US President Joe Biden has outlined the only circumstance that might prompt him to withdraw from the 2024 presidential election. In a recent interview, Biden stated that a serious medical diagnosis would be the decisive factor.
“If I had some medical condition that emerged, if somebody, if doctors came to me and said, you got this problem and that problem,” Biden remarked in an excerpt released on Wednesday, July 18.
The 81-year-old president provided this insight during a BET interview when asked about what might lead him to reconsider his candidacy. Biden, who has been a central figure in US politics for decades, emphasized the importance of running for a second term due to the country's current state of division.
“I said I was going to be a transitional candidate, and I thought I would be able to move on from this and pass it on to somebody else,” Biden explained. “But I didn’t anticipate things getting so, so, so divided. And quite frankly, I think the only thing age brings is a little bit of wisdom.”
The White House has maintained that Biden does not require a new medical examination following his unsteady debate performance on June 27, which raised concerns among fellow Democrats about his cognitive fitness for another four-year term.
Representative Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) recently became the 21st House Democrat to suggest that Biden step aside, stating, “It is time for him to pass the torch.”
Should Biden decide to withdraw from the race, Vice President Kamala Harris, 59, is widely considered the most likely replacement candidate. However, some Democrats express concerns that she might face even greater challenges in the election.
