A young woman was caught on camera engaging in inappropriate behavior with a statue of Bacchus, the god of wine and sensuality, in Florence, Italy, over the weekend. The footage, which shows the woman kissing, grinding, and simulating sexual acts with the statue, quickly went viral on social media.
The incident has provoked anger from Italy's culture ministry and officials in Florence. The mayor's office described the act as mimicking sex and called it deeply disrespectful.
Florence City Hall indicated that the tourist has not yet been identified but suggested she was "presumably in a state of inebriation." Officials warned that if she is identified, she could face fines and a potential lifetime ban from the city, in accordance with laws protecting the country's cultural heritage.
The statue involved is a replica of an original work created in the 16th century by the sculptor Giambologna, who was influenced by Hellenistic sculpture and the works of Michelangelo. Giambologna's original Bacchus is housed in the Bargello Museum in central Florence, while the replica stands on a street corner near the iconic Ponte Vecchio bridge.
Florence officials have reiterated their commitment to preserving the city's rich cultural legacy and have condemned the incident as a violation of this heritage. The investigation to identify the woman involved is ongoing, with authorities determined to enforce the law against such acts of disrespect.
