Appearing on the Arise TV Morning Show on Wednesday, political analyst Dr. Reuben Abati joined the growing number of voices urging the Nigerian government to abandon the idea. Ekpa, using his platform on X, strongly criticized the ministry's establishment, cautioning that its operations would be unwelcome in Biafran territories.
Ekpa expressed his concerns about the ministry's swift formation, viewing it as an undue prioritization by Tinubu’s administration. "Creating this ministry in any part of Biafra is unacceptable. Biafra territories must not be included in this livestock initiative," he asserted. Ekpa noted that the push for this ministry began on June 23, 2024, by the Fulani community and was promptly actualized by President Tinubu on July 9, 2024.
The call for the Livestock Development Ministry was originally made by the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) last month. Despite the BRGIE's opposition, many Nigerians have expressed concerns over the new ministry, particularly given the need to curtail government spending.
Financial expert Kalu Aja criticized the creation of the ministry, arguing that it reflects a lack of budgetary discipline and suggests political motivations. Meanwhile, the All Farmers Association of Nigeria has welcomed the move, believing it could help resolve the persistent conflicts between farmers and herders.
With the addition of this ministry, Nigeria now has a total of 50 ministries, raising concerns about the potential for increased recurrent expenditures amidst ongoing economic challenges.
