The FBI has identified Thomas Matthew Crooks, a 20-year-old from Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, as the individual responsible for the shooting incident targeting former President Donald Trump at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.
"The FBI has confirmed Thomas Matthew Crooks, 20, of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, as the individual involved in the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump on July 13 in Butler, Pennsylvania," stated the Bureau in a press release.
The investigation into the incident is ongoing, with the FBI urging anyone with pertinent information to come forward by submitting photos or videos through FBI.gov/butler or calling 1-800-CALL-FBI.
Authorities reported that Crooks was fatally shot by a Secret Service sniper during the rally. At a briefing, Kevin Rojek, FBI Pittsburgh special agent in charge, indicated that the motive behind the attack remains unidentified.
Due to the absence of identification on the gunman, federal investigators utilized DNA analysis to confirm his identity biometrically.
Following the incident, Trump was swiftly evacuated from the scene and transported to a local medical facility for treatment. He later recounted the harrowing experience on his Truth Social network, describing how he felt and the immediate medical attention he received after realizing he had been shot.
Trump mentioned, "I immediately sensed something was wrong when I heard a whizzing sound and shots, feeling the bullet rip through my skin. There was significant bleeding, confirming my realization."
Visible blood was observed on Trump's ear and face as security personnel rushed him to safety. The Secret Service confirmed that aside from the assailant, one bystander was killed in the shooting, while two others sustained critical injuries, all of whom were male.
