The hip-hop star was allegedly found consuming cannabis on stage during the seaside event early Sunday morning. Romanian authorities, who classify cannabis as a "risk drug" with penalties of up to ten years in prison for possession, escorted the rapper from the venue. Videos of the incident have circulated on social media.
Prosecutors from Romania's anti-organized crime unit (DIICOT) reported that Khalifa was in possession of over 18 grams of cannabis and had consumed another quantity in the form of a handmade cigarette during his performance. A source close to the investigation confirmed that Khalifa and several others were questioned early Sunday, with Khalifa being charged but not detained.
The investigation into the incident continues, according to prosecutors.
Khalifa, known for referencing marijuana in his lyrics, is among several celebrities who have endorsed or funded legal cannabis companies in the US, alongside Snoop Dogg, Seth Rogen, and Mike Tyson.
In related news, US rapper Nicki Minaj recently canceled her appearance at the Saga Festival in Bucharest due to safety concerns amid upcoming protests, although the demonstrations passed peacefully.
