Charly Boy: Withdrawing Respect from Wole Soyinka Over National Arts Theatre Renaming

Veteran singer and social activist Charles Oputa, popularly known as Charly Boy, has declared that he will no longer show reverence to Nobel Laureate Prof. Wole Soyinka. Charly Boy, a vocal critic of President Bola Tinubu, expressed his stance on Friday via his official social media handle in response to the renaming of the National Arts Theatre in Iganmu, Lagos, after Soyinka.

President Tinubu announced the renaming of the facility in a tribute marking Soyinka’s 90th birthday. Charly Boy strongly opposed the decision, lamenting, “The Mighty have fallen, for beans.”

He continued, “Uncle WOLE, I am withdrawing all the respect I once held for you. When the late Jimmy Johnson spoke about you in the 90s, I thought it was mere jest. Wow! How some of our once-revered figures have succumbed, whether for beans, beans and plantain, or even rice.”
