In a tragic turn of events, gunmen have attacked the Koko base of the Nigeria Customs Service in Kebbi State, resulting in the death of one officer and the abduction of another. The incident, which occurred at the Customs base, has raised significant concerns about the safety of security personnel and the effectiveness of anti-smuggling operations in the region.
According to a statement from the Kebbi State Command of the Nigeria Customs Service, the gunmen targeted the base, destroying several facilities. During the attack, officer Dabo Umar was killed, and his remains have been transported to Kaduna for Islamic burial. The assailants also abducted officer Babagana Kabiru.
The Command's Public Relations Officer, Muhammad Salisu, confirmed the distressing details and reported that a manhunt has been initiated to locate and rescue the abducted officer. Comptroller Earnest Iheanacho expressed condolences to Umar's family and assured that the Customs Service remains committed to its mission despite the threats posed by these criminal elements.
“We will not be deterred or forced by fear to abandon the patrol or the borders,” said Iheanacho. “Our resolve to stem smuggling at all costs is unwavering despite threats by disgruntled elements.”
As rescue operations continue, the Customs Command has vowed to keep the public informed of any developments. They have also urged officers at the borders to maintain high standards of professionalism and utilize all available safety measures during operations. This attack underscores the ongoing risks faced by security personnel in combating smuggling and maintaining border security in the region
