Chief Sunday Adeyemo, widely known as Sunday Igboho, has publicly denounced the upcoming nationwide protests scheduled to start on August 1, 2024. In a recent statement, Igboho criticized the protests as politically motivated and aimed at destabilizing Nigeria.
Igboho expressed his disapproval of the protests, stating, “I, Chief Sunday Igboho, am issuing this press release in response to the planned protests by some unknown and faceless individuals, who are working to disintegrate the country.” He accused the organizers of attempting to undermine President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, which he claims has made significant policy advances since taking office on May 29, 2023.
According to Igboho, the current administration's reforms, which include measures to reduce food prices and increase the minimum wage from ₦30,000 to ₦70,000, have been met with resistance from those opposed to the government. He contended that while economic hardships are a global issue, the protests are being used to target Tinubu’s leadership unfairly.
Igboho also took issue with the slogan of the protest, “Tinubu Must Go!” and stressed that such calls for regime change are unconstitutional. He contrasted this with past protests in the Southwest during President Buhari's tenure, emphasizing that those were aimed at protecting communities rather than seeking to destabilize the nation.
“The Yoruba Nation Movement and I firmly declare that we will not participate in any protest aimed at using the Southwest as a battleground for political upheaval,” Igboho asserted. He called on the Yoruba people and other Nigerians to reject the protest movement, highlighting that true change should come through democratic processes such as elections or referendums, not through protests.
Igboho also warned against any attempts to incite violence under the guise of the protests, urging people to avoid participating and to stay off the streets during the protest days. His statement reflects a clear stance against the planned demonstrations and a call for peaceful engagement in addressing Nigeria’s challenges.
