Matthew Brian Crooks, the father of Thomas Matthew Crooks—the young man who attempted to assassinate former President Donald Trump—has publicly spoken for the first time since the incident. The remarks were made on July 22, as Crooks, 53, was seen leaving a grocery store.
"We just want to try to take care of ourselves right now. Please, just give us our space," Crooks told reporters while unloading groceries from his car. He added that the family would release a formal statement once advised by their legal counsel but declined to comment further at this time.
This marks the first public statement from Crooks since his 20-year-old son attempted the assassination at a Trump campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, on July 13. During the incident, Thomas Matthew Crooks fired an AR-15 rifle at Trump before being shot dead by a Secret Service counter-sniper. The attack only managed to graze the former president’s ear with one of the bullets.
