Bolanle Ambode, former Lagos State First Lady and founder of the Hope for Women in Nigeria Initiative (HOFOWEM), has advised Nigerian youths, especially girls, to prioritize their ambitions and avoid risky intimate relationships that could hinder their dreams. Ambode shared this message at the launch of “Let the Child Live,” a book by Caroline Oluwadare, a HOFOWEM beneficiary, held in Lagos.
Represented by Oyefunke Olayinka, Ambode emphasized the need for strong self-discipline, moral values, and guidance from parents. She highlighted the role of early education in shaping children’s futures and urged parents to steer their children away from negative influences while instilling a strong sense of self-respect and faith.
Reflecting on the impact of HOFOWEM, Ambode noted that what began as a small initiative has grown into a significant support system, providing scholarships to talented individuals like Caroline and helping them achieve First Class Honours. She encouraged youths to follow the example set by HOFOWEM’s beneficiaries and remain dedicated to their educational and career goals.
Caroline Oluwadare, the book’s author, stated that the book aims to raise awareness among teenagers about sexual abstinence and managing teenage pregnancy, which she views as a major societal issue. She stressed that the event’s broader goal is to contribute to sustainable development and address social challenges.
Keynote speaker Juliet Obijiaku also urged girls to focus on their personal and career development, advocating for abstinence as a means to achieve their goals. She highlighted the importance of awareness campaigns to tackle teenage pregnancy and reduce associated stigma, calling for supportive environments for affected individuals.
Book reviewer Mrs. Toyin Olanrewaju praised Oluwadare for her insightful writing, which not only identifies problems but also provides solutions to help youth overcome challenges. Olanrewaju encouraged victims of teenage pregnancy to seek help rather than suffering in silence and urged parents to offer support rather than judgment.
