Teenager Sentenced to Life for Fatal Stabbing in London

Elijah Gookol-Mely, 18, has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of 17-year-old Victor Lee, with a minimum term of 20 years. The sentencing took place at the Old Bailey on July 19.

Gookol-Mely was convicted of both murder and robbery after phone data and CCTV footage linked him to the fatal stabbing of Lee. The attack occurred on June 25, 2023, near the Grand Union Canal in Scrubs Lane, London. Lee was stabbed and then pushed into the canal, where he later died despite efforts by locals and emergency responders.

Detective Chief Inspector Brian Howie, who led the investigation, commended Lee’s family for their strength during the trial. He emphasized the brutality of the crime and the profound impact on Lee's loved ones. Forensic evidence, including a knife with Lee’s blood and Gookol-Mely’s DNA, was crucial in securing the conviction. The robbery motive was confirmed, with Gookol-Mely stealing Lee’s bike and rucksack.

Lee’s mother described her life as shattered, mourning the loss of a beloved son. His father likened the grief to a persistent wound, and his sister reflected on the deep personal loss and the void left by his absence.

Howie noted that while no sentence can restore the family’s loss, Gookol-Mely’s lengthy imprisonment will prevent further harm to others.
