Kamala Harris Urges Policing Reforms After Fatal Shooting of Sonya Massey

On Tuesday, Vice President Kamala Harris called for urgent policing reforms in the wake of the tragic death of Sonya Massey, a 36-year-old Black woman who was fatally shot by an Illinois sheriff’s deputy earlier this month.

“Sonya Massey deserved to feel safe,” Harris said in her statement. “She called for help, and instead, her life was taken in her own home by an officer sworn to protect and serve.”

Harris, who is expected to lead the Democratic ticket in the upcoming presidential election, expressed her condolences to Massey’s family and friends, alongside her husband, Doug Emhoff. She also extended her thoughts to “communities nationwide who face suspicion, distrust, and even violence when they seek help.”

The incident came into sharper focus on Monday when a 36-minute body-camera video of the shooting was made public. The footage shows deputies from Sangamon County Sheriff’s Office responding to Massey’s 911 call about a potential intruder at her Springfield home on July 6.

In the video, deputies Sean Grayson, who has since been charged with three counts of first-degree murder, and another officer are seen entering the home. Grayson instructed Massey to remove a pot of boiling water from the stove. When Massey moved towards the stove, tensions escalated quickly.

The situation deteriorated as Grayson threatened Massey, drawing his firearm and pointing it at her. Despite her attempts to comply and de-escalate, Grayson fired three shots, resulting in Massey’s death. Grayson has since been dismissed from the force and is being held without bond.

In response to the released footage, Harris emphasized the need for significant reform within the justice system. “The disturbing video we saw yesterday underscores the urgent need for systemic changes to ensure our justice system is truly just,” she stated.

President Joe Biden also weighed in on the situation, urging Congress to pass the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act—a comprehensive reform bill coauthored by Harris when she was a U.S. senator. Although the bill passed the House of Representatives in 2021, it has stalled in the Senate.

Harris reaffirmed her commitment to the cause, saying, “In honor of Sonya’s memory and countless others, we must unite to implement meaningful reforms that enhance safety for all communities.”
