In the latest episode of The Kardashians airing on July 18, Kim Kardashian opened up about her ongoing battle with emotional detachment and trauma. During a candid conversation with her sister Khloe Kardashian, Kim expressed concerns that she might be becoming emotionally numb due to past experiences.
Kim shared an insightful conversation she had with her therapist, who suggested that her tendency to remain calm might be a coping mechanism developed from dealing with trauma. “My therapist said, ‘You think calm is your superpower. I think you are so desensitized from trauma that you literally are frozen in fight or flight,’” Kim recalled. Her therapist explained that what once served as a survival strategy—remaining calm during crises—has now become her default mode, potentially stifling her emotional responses.
Khloe speculated that Kim’s calm demeanor might be linked to her traumatic experience during the 2016 Paris robbery. “You were never calm before,” Khloe noted. “You cried about everything. You were bratty. You threw tantrums. Everything stopped after you got robbed because you stayed calm in that situation, and you even said, ‘My calmness is what kept me alive.’”
Reflecting on the robbery, Kim recalled the intense fear she experienced. “Imagine you’re like, gun to your head, getting tied up, dragged across a hotel room, and the guy, I remember him telling me, ‘Just like, stay calm and you’ll live.’ And I did that,” she said. Kim acknowledged that her calmness in that dire situation likely saved her life, but she now worries that this constant state of calm might be leading her to become emotionally detached or robotic.
“I think I’ve let it get too calm to where people could take advantage of my calmness or I’m just turning into a full robot with like, no emotion,” Kim reflected, highlighting her struggle to balance emotional regulation with genuine human connection.
