Lady Gaga Wows at Paris 2024 Olympics Opening Ceremony with French Cabaret Classic

American pop star Stefani Germanotta, known professionally as Lady Gaga, delivered a stunning performance at the opening ceremony of the Paris 2024 Olympics on Friday. The singer captivated the audience with a rendition of "Mon Truc en Plumes," a French cabaret classic originally performed by Zizi Jeanmaire, from the base of the iconic Eiffel Tower.

In a heartfelt statement released through V, Gaga shared the extensive preparation and dedication that went into her performance. She expressed deep gratitude for the opportunity to perform at the Olympics, describing it as a cherished experience she would always remember.

“I feel so completely grateful to have been asked to open the Paris 2024 Olympics this year. I am also humbled to be invited by the Olympics organizing committee to sing such a special French song—a tribute to the French people and their rich legacy of art, music, and theatre,” Gaga stated.

The song “Mon Truc en Plumes,” which means “My Thing with Feathers,” was famously performed by French ballerina Zizi Jeanmaire in 1961. Gaga noted the connection between Jeanmaire’s performance and her own, highlighting Jeanmaire's role in Cole Porter’s musical “Anything Goes,” which was also a part of Gaga’s early jazz influences.

Despite not being French, Gaga conveyed a profound connection with French culture, underscoring her love for French music and the deep bond she feels with the French people.

To honor the French cabaret tradition, Gaga and her team collaborated with Dior to create custom costumes featuring naturally molted feathers and sourced pom-poms from Le Lido, a historic French cabaret theater. Gaga also incorporated French choreography with a modern twist into her performance.

“I hope you love this performance as much as I do,” Gaga said, recalling her early days performing at a 60s French-themed party in New York City. “And to everyone in France, thank you so much for welcoming me to your country to sing in honor of you—it’s a gift I’ll never forget!”

Gaga concluded her statement by congratulating the athletes competing in the Games and expressing her honor at performing for them and cheering them on.
