A man was apprehended by customs officers in Shenzhen, China, for attempting to smuggle over 100 live snakes into the country by hiding them in his pants. The incident occurred as the man was traveling from the semi-autonomous Hong Kong region.
According to a statement released by the China Customs Authority on Tuesday, July 9, the officers discovered six canvas drawstring bags concealed in the pockets of the man's trousers. Each bag, sealed with tape, contained various live snakes of different shapes, sizes, and colors.
In total, 104 snakes were recovered, including milk snakes and corn snakes, many of which are non-native to China. The customs authorities confirmed that none of the reptiles were venomous.
While the statement did not specify whether the man was arrested, it emphasized that legal action would be pursued if regulations were violated.
China remains a significant hotspot for animal trafficking despite ongoing crackdowns by authorities. Chinese laws prohibit the import of non-native species without government permission.
"Is that 104 live snakes in your pocket, or are you just pleased to see me?" tweeted Kerry Allen, commenting on the bizarre incident at Futian Port.
