MURIC Calls for Ban on Controversial Film Featuring Nancy Isime

The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has urged the federal government to ban a controversial film starring actress Nancy Isime, titled ‘Blood Brothers.’ The film's promotional material, which shows Isime in a niqab while holding a gun, has sparked significant backlash from the Muslim community.

The niqab, a traditional garment worn by Muslim women to cover their bodies and faces except for their eyes, has been a point of contention in the film’s portrayal. Critics argue that the depiction of women in niqabs engaged in criminal activities, such as bank robbery, is both provocative and offensive.

In response to the controversy, Ishaq Akintola, the director of MURIC, condemned the film in a statement issued on Thursday. Akintola labeled the movie as “satanic” and “anti-Muslim,” asserting that it promotes Islamophobia and misrepresents Muslim women.

“The film portrays Muslim women as violent criminals, which is both repugnant and inflammatory,” Akintola said. “It is designed to incite public hostility towards Muslim women and undermine their right to wear the hijab and niqab.”

MURIC has called on the National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB) to investigate the film and enforce a ban if deemed necessary. Akintola emphasized the potential for the film to exacerbate tensions and incite unrest, urging the authorities to act swiftly.

The organization also appealed to Nigerian Muslims to remain calm and allow the appropriate channels to address the issue. They have expressed their concerns through various media, and are awaiting a response from the NFVCB regarding the film’s future distribution.
