Nigerian Immigration Detainee Charged in $9 Million Drug Operation in Sydney

Dirichukwu Patrick Nweke, a 49-year-old Nigerian immigration detainee, has been charged in connection with a significant drug operation allegedly run from the Villawood Immigration Detention Centre in Sydney. Nweke, along with an accomplice, is accused of orchestrating a sophisticated drug trafficking network utilizing encrypted messaging services.

New South Wales Police disclosed that Nweke directed a network managing the distribution of large quantities of methylamphetamine and cocaine throughout Sydney. On July 11, a search of a unit within the detention centre led to the discovery of three mobile phones. Further investigations resulted in the seizure of 2 kilograms of methylamphetamine and $169,000 in cash.

Nweke faces multiple charges, including directing a criminal group and supplying a large commercial quantity of prohibited drugs. In a related operation on Wednesday, detectives uncovered methylamphetamine and heroin hidden in a toilet bowl during a raid on a residence in Liverpool. Additional drugs and $325,000 in cash were also seized.

A 24-year-old man, alleged to be a runner for Nweke, was arrested and charged with drug-related offenses. Detective Superintendent Peter Faux confirmed that the seized drugs, with a street value exceeding $9 million, were linked to three separate drug syndicates dismantled during the operation.

Both Nweke and the alleged runner were denied bail after their court appearances at Bankstown Local Court on July 12.
