Pastor Paul Adefarasin, the Senior Pastor of House on the Rock, has faced significant backlash on social media after releasing a statement condemning the assassination attempt on former US President Donald Trump during a campaign rally.
The incident occurred on Saturday, July 13, at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, where a bullet grazed Trump's right ear. The shooting left one person dead and another seriously injured.
In his social media statement, Adefarasin expressed gratitude for Trump's survival and extended condolences to the family of the deceased spectator. He wrote:
"We denounce political violence in the leading democracy of the free world. We are grateful to God for the survival of former President Donald J. Trump without fatal injury. Our heartfelt condolences go out to the family of the deceased spectator, and we pray for the injured. Our prayers are for a swift and complete recovery for former President Trump.
We commend the Secret Service for their quick response and are thankful that the assassination attempt was unsuccessful, allowing Donald Trump to continue participating in the democratic process. We also appreciate President Biden for condemning the assassination attempt and for his communication with Donald Trump.
Our prayers are with both candidates and the democratic process in America. As Africans, we are inspired by the American democratic system. Long live American democracy, and may God bless America."
However, Adefarasin's post sparked harsh criticism from Nigerians, who accused him of hypocrisy for not condemning the violence and killings during Nigeria's 2023 elections.
The backlash was swift, with many Nigerians expressing their displeasure in the comment section of his post.
