Northern Coalition Condemns Support for Nnamdi Kanu’s Release as Treacherous and Unpatriotic

The Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG) has strongly criticized federal lawmakers, particularly those from the North, for supporting calls for the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). This criticism comes as the demand for Kanu's freedom gains traction among prominent Nigerians, including some lawmakers.

CNG condemned the support for Kanu's release as "treacherous" and accused the supporting lawmakers of being unpatriotic. The Coalition expressed a willingness to overlook the support from Southeast governors and lawmakers, who they believe have long been Kanu’s allies, but they find it inconceivable that Northern lawmakers would back the call.

According to CNG, advocating for Kanu’s release is an affront to the memory of those who died due to Kanu’s secessionist activities and a disservice to the Nigerian people. The group recalled that on August 7, 2017, they reported Kanu to the United Nations for alleged acts of terrorism against innocent Nigerians and have since called for IPOB to be designated as a terrorist organization.

In a statement signed by National Coordinator Comrade Jamilu Aliyu Charanchi, CNG denounced what they termed as "legislative rascality," expressing shock that House of Representatives members, including those from Northern Nigeria, are supporting the release of someone they deem a terrorist. The statement criticized these lawmakers for allegedly undermining the rule of law and disregarding the ongoing violence and destruction caused by Kanu and his supporters against Northerners.

The Coalition also warned that such support for Kanu demoralizes security personnel and undermines their efforts. They expressed particular condemnation for Northern lawmakers involved, asserting that their actions are both shameful and disheartening.

CNG concluded with a firm stance against terrorism, vowing not to let the sacrifices of those affected by the violence be in vain and pledging to continue opposing any form of terrorism.
