Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has issued a stark warning about the potential consequences of neglecting the needs of Africa’s youth. Reacting to recent protests in Kenya, Obasanjo highlighted the severe challenges faced by young Africans, including unemployment, lack of empowerment, and pervasive poverty.
He emphasized that when young people have nothing to lose and see their leaders living in extreme wealth, they are driven to take drastic measures. “If you are jobless, unempowered, and in poverty, while your leaders live in obscene affluence, what do you expect? The resources of your country are meant for the benefit of all its citizens,” Obasanjo stated.
Obasanjo cautioned that failing to address these issues could lead to situations even more severe than the Arab Spring. “If we do not address the needs of Africa’s youth soon, what starts as autumn may turn into a harsh winter, with dire consequences for all of us,” he warned.
