A protest outside Rochdale Police Station on Wednesday evening was prompted by recent controversial events at Manchester Airport, where police actions have come under intense scrutiny. Demonstrators voiced their dissatisfaction with what they described as "police brutality" and demanded accountability.
Assistant Chief Constable Wasim Chaudhry confirmed that the protest concluded peacefully, without incident. He also addressed the situation surrounding the police response at Manchester Airport, acknowledging the widespread concerns. "We know that a film of the incident circulating widely shows a truly shocking event, and it has understandably alarmed many people," Chaudhry said in a statement to the News.
Following the incident, which involved a violent altercation at the airport on Tuesday evening, one male officer has been removed from operational duties. The Greater Manchester Police (GMP) has voluntarily referred itself to the Independent Office of Police Conduct (IOPC) for an independent review of its actions.
The altercation began around 20:25 BST, prompting the deployment of firearms officers after reports of a public disturbance. During the arrest, three officers were reportedly "punched to the ground" in what was described as a violent assault. The situation was further exacerbated by the risk of firearms being seized from the officers involved.
Three officers were hospitalized, including one female officer who sustained a broken nose. Two men were arrested on charges including assault and obstructing police, while two additional men face similar charges.
The IOPC has stated it will review GMP's referral to determine if further action is necessary.
