Rescue Efforts Underway for Cargo Ship Sunk by Typhoon Gaemi

Rescue operations are in full swing off Taiwan's southern coast after a cargo ship sank amid the onslaught of Typhoon Gaemi. The Tanzania-flagged freighter, identified as Fu Shun, went down near the port city of Kaohsiung, with nine Myanmar nationals reported missing.

Typhoon Gaemi, which struck Taiwan’s east coast on Wednesday, has caused significant disruption across the region. The storm has claimed three lives and left hundreds injured on the island. In addition to the maritime incident near Taiwan, the typhoon has intensified rainy conditions in the Philippines.

In Manila Bay, a Philippine-flagged tanker, MT Terra Nova, carrying approximately 1.5 million liters of industrial fuel, capsized while en route to the central city of Iloilo. Sixteen of the tanker’s crew members have been rescued, with one still unaccounted for, according to Transportation Secretary Jaime Bautista. The tanker’s sinking has resulted in a significant oil spill stretching several kilometers, complicating cleanup efforts due to strong winds and high waves.

Taiwan's Coastguard Administration reported that, besides the sunken freighter, three other foreign vessels ran aground during the typhoon but are safe. Typhoon Gaemi is expected to make a second landfall in mainland China after crossing Taiwan.
