The Rescue Movement for New Nigeria has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to honor citizens' rights to peaceful protest and address their pressing needs, rather than attempting to stifle their voices.
At an emergency meeting, Rev. Emmanuel Olorunmagba, the group's National Media Director, emphasized the importance of respecting democratic rights amid ongoing tensions between the government and Nigerian citizens. The movement criticized recent government actions that they believe suppress fundamental rights, highlighting issues like widespread hunger, soaring unemployment, rampant insecurity, and currency devaluation.
The Rescue Movement urged the government to prioritize addressing these critical issues rather than focusing on suppressing peaceful demonstrations. They called for:
- Listening to Citizens: Act on the grievances of the people through meaningful and tangible measures.
- Respect for Peaceful Assembly: Uphold and protect the right to peaceful protests.
- Transparent Communication: Provide updates to the public through national broadcasts to foster a sense of inclusion and trust.
The group also appealed to Nigerians to conduct their protests peacefully, avoiding violence and destruction. They stressed that any attempt to suppress protests through intimidation or financial incentives would only exacerbate the nation’s challenges.
Additionally, the movement urged law enforcement to refrain from actions that could provoke violence. They called on all Nigerians, including government officials and citizens, to work together to safeguard the country and promote its development.
The Rescue Movement's appeal reflects a growing call for the Nigerian government to address systemic issues and engage with citizens in a constructive and democratic manner.
