International Alerts Issued as Nigeria Prepares for #EndBadGovernance Protests

The United States, United Kingdom, and Canada have issued urgent travel advisories to their citizens in Nigeria ahead of the anticipated #EndBadGovernance protests scheduled for August 1, 2024. The advisories come amid heightened concerns about potential violence during these demonstrations.

The U.S. Mission in Abuja has urged Americans to avoid large gatherings and stay informed through local media. Their advisory highlights the risk of roadblocks, traffic congestion, and confrontations, noting that nationwide protests are expected between July 29 and August 5. The UK High Commission has similarly warned British nationals to exercise caution, especially in major cities like Abuja and Lagos, citing the possibility of sudden and violent disruptions. Their advisory emphasizes avoiding crowded areas and being aware of potential dangers.

Canada has also alerted its citizens to possible disruptions in traffic and public transportation, advising vigilance and adherence to local instructions. The Canadian government’s warning aligns with those from the U.S. and UK, highlighting the unpredictable nature of these protests and the potential for violence.

The planned protests come as President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration faces mounting criticism over governance issues and economic challenges. Emergency meetings involving top government officials and security agencies reflect the administration's concern over the unfolding situation.

As Nigeria braces for these significant demonstrations, international governments are emphasizing safety and caution for their nationals in the region.
