Resignation of Rishi Sunak: Conservative Leader Concedes Defeat After Election Loss

Rishi Sunak announced his resignation as Conservative leader following the party's significant defeat to Labour in the general election.

Addressing the nation outside 10 Downing Street, Sunak expressed deep regret over the election outcome, acknowledging the electorate's "anger and disappointment" and their call for change.

"I am deeply sorry," Sunak began. "I have dedicated myself fully to this role, but I understand and respect the clear message from the British people that a change in government is needed. Your judgment is paramount."

Taking responsibility for the loss, Sunak confirmed his intention to step down as Prime Minister and Conservative leader once the process for selecting his successor is finalized. The Conservative Party's results, with just over 121 seats, marked their worst performance in history.

Sunak extended congratulations to Keir Starmer for Labour's sweeping victory, emphasizing his respect for Starmer as a person of integrity and dedication to public service. He wished Starmer and his family well as they transition into their new roles.

Reflecting on his tenure, Sunak highlighted achievements such as achieving the Bank of England's inflation target, reducing mortgage rates, and bolstering the UK's international stature through support for Ukraine and negotiating the Windsor framework for post-Brexit trade in Northern Ireland.

"I am proud of what we have accomplished," Sunak asserted. "I believe our country is safer, stronger, and more prosperous today than it was when I took office. We have made strides towards fairness and resilience."

Sunak concluded with a message of gratitude and optimism for the future, pledging continued support for the country's progress under new leadership.
