In a recent address marking Russian Navy Day in St. Petersburg, President Vladimir Putin has issued a stern warning to the United States regarding its plans to deploy long-range missiles in Germany by 2026. This move, according to Putin, risks rekindling Cold War-era tensions and could lead to a new missile crisis between the two superpowers.
The United States, in conjunction with Germany, announced earlier this month its intention to station advanced long-range fire capabilities in Germany as part of its commitment to NATO and European defense. This deployment will include SM-6 and Tomahawk cruise missiles, along with developing hypersonic weapons with extended ranges beyond current European capabilities.
In his speech, Putin expressed concerns that such U.S. actions could trigger a situation similar to the Cold War missile crises. He highlighted that these missiles, potentially equipped with nuclear warheads, could reach targets within Russia in approximately ten minutes. As a countermeasure, Russia plans to deploy its own similar missiles in response to U.S. moves and those of its European allies.
Putin's remarks draw parallels with the deployment of Pershing II missiles in Western Europe in 1979, which the Soviet leadership at the time viewed as a strategic threat aimed at incapacitating Soviet military and political leadership. He emphasized that the current situation mirrors these past events, suggesting that the U.S. is again escalating tensions through its military strategies.
The Russian leader reiterated his earlier stance that Russia may consider resuming production of intermediate and shorter-range nuclear-capable missiles if the U.S. continues to bolster its missile presence in Europe and Asia. This would mark a significant shift in military strategy and potentially lead to heightened global tensions.
As the U.S. and its NATO allies move forward with their plans, the international community will be watching closely to see how Russia responds and whether these developments will lead to a new phase of strategic confrontation reminiscent of Cold War dynamics.
