Senate Removes Senator Ndume as Chief Whip Following Party Directive

Senator Mohamed Ali Ndume of Borno South has been removed from his position as Chief Whip of the Senate, following a decision endorsed by members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Senate Caucus during today's plenary session on July 17.

The removal of Ndume was confirmed after a voice vote presided over by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, who announced that Senator Tahir Monguno would replace Ndume as Chief Whip.

The decision to remove Ndume aligns with a directive from the national leadership of the APC, urging him to resign from the party and join any opposition party of his choice. This directive was communicated to Ndume in a letter signed by the party’s national chairman, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, and Secretary, Barrister Ajibola Bashiru.

Ndume’s recent criticisms of the Tinubu-led government had drawn significant backlash from supporters of the ruling party, particularly those aligned with the pro-Tinubu camp. Senator Sunday Karimi (Kogi West) and other APC members condemned Ndume's statements as derogatory and contrary to party interests.

In interviews, Ndume had publicly criticized the accessibility of President Tinubu, alleging that certain ministers within the government lacked direct access to the President's office. These comments further strained his relations with the party hierarchy, leading to the decision for his removal as Chief Whip.

The swift action by the APC Senate Caucus underscores internal party discipline and adherence to party directives, as the APC prepares for upcoming political engagements and alignments.

Ndume, a seasoned politician and representative of Borno South, has yet to issue a public statement regarding his removal from the Chief Whip position. His future political stance remains uncertain as he faces the implications of this decision within the APC and Nigeria's political landscape.

The APC continues to navigate internal dynamics amidst preparations for future elections, aiming to consolidate party cohesion and strategic alignment ahead of key political developments in the country.
