Spanish FA President Pedro Rocha Receives Two-Year Football Ban Amid Controversy

Pedro Rocha, the president of the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), has been handed a two-year ban from football activities by Spain's Administrative Tribunal of Sport (TAD), marking a tumultuous period for the federation just days after Spain's victory in the 2024 European Championship held in Germany.

Rocha assumed the interim presidency of the RFEF following the resignation of former president Luis Rubiales, who faced widespread criticism and subsequent FIFA sanctions after an incident involving a forced kiss on Spain's Jennifer Hermoso during the Women's World Cup trophy presentation in 2023. Rubiales contends that the kiss was consensual but has since been banned from football for three years and faces legal proceedings for alleged sexual assault and coercion related to the incident.

After serving as interim president, Rocha was appointed permanently to the role. However, his actions during the interim period have come under scrutiny from TAD, leading to the imposition of a two-year ban. The tribunal cited Rocha for exceeding his authority, particularly in his decision to dismiss former general secretary Andreu Camps, which TAD deemed an abuse of power.

In addition to the ban, Rocha has been fined £13,880 (€16,527) for his infractions, according to reports from the Mirror. Despite the sanctions, Rocha intends to appeal the decision, a move that allows him to remain in his position pending the outcome of the appeal process.

Both Rocha and Rubiales are also subjects of a corruption investigation related to the mismanagement of the Super Cup's relocation to Saudi Arabia. Rocha has maintained that he bears no responsibility for the alleged misconduct under investigation.

Both presidents have denied any wrongdoing throughout these controversies, as they navigate legal challenges and scrutiny over their management of Spanish football affairs. The ongoing developments underscore a period of significant upheaval within the RFEF, prompting questions about leadership stability and governance within one of Europe's most prominent football federations.
