Former Senator Shehu Sani has sharply criticized officials of the Katsina State government for purportedly diverting bags of rice intended for the needy. In a statement posted on his X handle on Friday, Sani condemned the alleged actions and warned against blaming the public for unrest if protests ensue.
Sani’s remarks were sparked by recent revelations that operatives from the Department of State Services (DSS) in Katsina State recovered 2,000 bags of rice, which had reportedly been diverted from a total of 20 trucks donated by the Nigerian Government. The rice was part of a federal initiative aimed at alleviating the economic struggles faced by citizens amid rising hardship.
In his post, Sani questioned, “Katsina Government officials, why did you divert bags of rice meant for the poor? If the people now protest, you will say they are causing trouble.” His comments underscore frustration over what he views as a betrayal of public trust during a time of economic difficulty.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria, the diversion of these essential supplies has been attributed to certain government officials, raising concerns about the integrity of the distribution process. The rice donation was part of a broader effort by the federal government to provide relief to those affected by current economic challenges.
Sani’s statement highlights growing discontent with government transparency and accountability, especially regarding the distribution of aid designed to support the most vulnerable segments of the population.
