The Kano State Public Complaint and Anti-Corruption Commission (PCACC) has voiced its concerns over the recent spike in bread and foodstuff prices, pledging to tackle the issue amid allegations of artificial inflation by local traders.
On Thursday, Barr. Muhuyi Magaji Rimin Gado, Chairman of the Commission, addressed the media at the PCACC headquarters in Kano. He expressed the Commission’s unease about the rising costs of bread, despite the fact that the price of flour, a key ingredient, has remained stable.
Gado reported that the Commission had received numerous public complaints regarding the high cost of bread, even though the price of flour had decreased recently. "The public is questioning why bread prices have not been reduced in line with the lower cost of flour," he stated.
He further explained that while the Commission had engaged with local bakers, they claimed to have already reduced bread prices. However, they also reported that flour dealers had raised the price of flour by N5,000 per bag in a short span, from N60,000 to N65,000.
The PCACC is currently mediating between the bakers and flour dealers to address the discrepancy and ensure fair pricing practices. Gado emphasized that the Commission has previously intervened successfully in similar situations, such as during Ramadan and in response to COVID-19 and fuel shortages, to prevent undue hardship on the public.
He recalled that President Bola Tinubu praised Kano’s efforts during Ramadan to combat food hoarding and urged other states to adopt similar measures. Gado reiterated the Commission’s commitment to ensuring that essential commodities remain affordable and that the interests of the public are safeguarded against exploitative practices.
