Igwe Asadu emphasized that Kanu's release would significantly reduce the ongoing tension in Nigeria's South East region. He highlighted that the Council, along with regional stakeholders including governors and lawmakers, supports the call for Kanu's freedom.
"He is our son and has been in detention for an extended period despite the challenges with the judiciary," said Igwe Asadu. "We endorse the call from the Governors Forum and other stakeholders for his release, which we believe will help ease regional tensions."
The Chairman suggested that if the government decides to release Kanu, it should be done with appropriate measures to ensure that the process meets legal expectations and maintains public confidence. He also expressed hope that such a move would bring about a sense of relief and joy among the people of the South East.
"We believe that a pardon from the President would be met with immense gratitude," Asadu added. "His absence is deeply felt in our community, especially among his supporters. All traditional rulers are united in their prayers for his release, and we are confident it would be a positive step for the region."
The Council anticipates that Kanu's release would contribute to greater peace and stability, and they look forward to acknowledging the government's action with appreciation.
