Spain secured a narrow 1-0 victory over Nigeria in a thrilling Group C match held in Nantes on Sunday, thanks to a spectacular free-kick by Alexia Patellas.
The match saw Spain dominating possession early on, but Nigeria's resilient defense, anchored by the experienced Osinachi Ohale, kept the game goalless for a significant period. Despite several attempts, including a close effort by Esther Okoronkwo in the 22nd minute, Nigeria struggled to capitalize on their opportunities. Okoronkwo’s chance, set up by Rasheedat Ajibade, was saved by Spanish goalkeeper Cata Coll.
In the first half, Ajibade missed a crucial opportunity after being played through on goal by Asisat Oshoala, while Chiamaka Nnadozie made a remarkable save to deny Lucia Garcia just before the break.
Spain's pressure continued in the second half, with Salma Paralluello’s goal being ruled out for offside in the 53rd minute. Ajibade again missed a chance in the 65th minute, and a superb block by Ohale kept Aitana Bonmati from scoring ten minutes from time.
The breakthrough came in the 85th minute when Alexia Patellas curled a beautiful free-kick past Nnadozie to secure the win for Spain. Nigeria’s Chiwendu Ihezuo had a chance to equalize in stoppage time but was unable to convert.
The Super Falcons will now face Japan in their final group game on Wednesday, hoping to advance further in the tournament.
