President Nicolas Maduro has been officially declared the winner of Venezuela’s presidential election, securing his third term in office. According to the country's electoral body, Maduro received 51 percent of the vote in the election held on July 28.
This outcome contradicts several exit polls that had predicted an opposition victory, with many voters expressing dissatisfaction with the Maduro administration's performance. Opposition candidate Edmundo Gonzalez, who was initially seen as a strong contender, garnered 44 percent of the vote.
In response to his contentious victory, Maduro hailed his reelection as a victory for peace and stability. To address growing public skepticism and potential dissent, he announced plans to initiate a national dialogue on Monday.
Criticism from the opposition has been swift, with allegations that the National Electoral Council acted in favor of the government rather than maintaining impartiality. Gonzalez, in a statement posted on X before the official results, asserted, “The results cannot be hidden. The country has peacefully chosen a change.”
