Title: Ogun State Police Arrest 20 Youths Amid Oro Festival Protest

In a recent development in Ikenne Local Government Area, Ogun State, tensions have escalated following a clash between local youths and security operatives. The Ogun State Commissioner of Police, Abiodun Alamutu, confirmed on Saturday that at least 20 youths have been detained in connection with the unrest.

The unrest erupted as a group of youths took to the streets in protest against a ban on the Oro festival, a significant cultural event in the community. The decision to prohibit the festival was made by local authorities to prevent potential violence stemming from ongoing disputes related to the recent kingship contest in the area.

According to reports the protestors expressed their dissatisfaction by blocking major roads and burning tyres. This led to a confrontation with police officers who were dispatched to restore order. In the ensuing clash, the police detained the protestors and seized two vehicles.

Commissioner Alamutu addressed the situation, highlighting the underlying issue of the kingship dispute which has been a source of tension in Ikenne. He explained that the local government, concerned about maintaining peace, decided to ban the festival this year as a precautionary measure. This decision follows a similar ban from the previous year, aimed at averting potential conflicts.

The arrested youths, along with the impounded vehicles, are set to be transferred to the state police command in Eleweran, Abeokuta, where they will face legal proceedings for their actions. The authorities remain vigilant, aiming to prevent further escalation and maintain peace in the community.
