Tracy Cortez went to unusual lengths to make weight for her UFC main event against Rose Namajunas, needing to shed half a pound to hit the 126lbs mark. Facing this challenge, Cortez took an unconventional approach: she cut off a handful of her own hair.
This impromptu haircut did the trick, as Cortez successfully weighed in at exactly 126lbs on Friday, clutching the clipped hair for the cameras as she posed. The 30-year-old fighter, sporting a new bob, now prepares to face Namajunas in the headlining bout on Saturday night in Denver. Originally scheduled to fight Maycee Barber, Namajunas shifted her focus to Cortez after Barber withdrew due to health issues.
Reflecting on her drastic measure to meet the weight requirement, Cortez remarked to ESPN, "What was it, .5 pounds? I was like, 'No hesitation. We’ll do whatever it takes. This is a big opportunity.'"
Cortez boasts an impressive MMA record of 11-1, with a streak of 11 consecutive victories. Despite her formidable track record, Namajunas (12-6) enters the bout as the favored contender with odds at minus-200.
The UFC's return to Denver after six years features a stacked card at Ball Arena, culminating in the eagerly anticipated clash between Namajunas and Cortez. As a former strawweight champion, Namajunas aims to ascend the flyweight ranks with a decisive performance against her determined opponent.
