Arizona officials are investigating the death of Denise Prudhomme, a 60-year-old Wells Fargo employee who was discovered dead at her desk four days after she last scanned into her office. Prudhomme entered the Wells Fargo office building on West Washington Street in Tempe, Arizona, at 7 a.m. on August 16. It wasn’t until August 20 that security alerted authorities to a "subject down" in the building, according to local reports.
An anonymous employee told 12News that Prudhomme’s body was found in her cubicle, located on the third floor and away from the main aisle, by a colleague who was walking through the building. When emergency responders arrived, Prudhomme was pronounced dead at 4:55 p.m.
Several employees reported a foul odor in the area in the days prior, but many assumed it was related to plumbing issues. One employee expressed shock, saying, “It’s really heartbreaking… To hear she’s been sitting at the desk like that makes me feel sick… and nobody did anything. That’s how she spent her last moments.”
Wells Fargo released a statement expressing deep sadness over the loss of their colleague: “We are deeply saddened by the tragic loss of our colleague at our Tempe office. Our thoughts and prayers are with their family and loved ones during this difficult time.” The company also noted that counselors were available to support employees and that they were cooperating fully with the ongoing police investigation.
The Tempe police department, in collaboration with the Maricopa County Medical Examiner’s Office, is investigating the cause of Prudhomme’s death. Preliminary findings indicate no signs of foul play, though the investigation remains ongoing.
